Ane Mulligan's Baptist Beans
About
this recipe, Ane says, "I had an unnamed wonderful recipe for a
bean casserole when we were about to move from Georgia to upstate
NY. I invited my entire choir (90 voices) over for a farewell dinner
at my house. I fixed the bean dish. It has meat in it and good
stuff. They scraped the bottom of dish clean. Then I got to laughing
and teased our pastor that if the entire choir ate beans, he might
be in trouble in the morning.
We had a good chuckle –
BUT the next morning as we were already on the platform, when the
pastor walked out, we all (all 90 of us) wafted out choir folders
toward him. He lost it. He started laughing so hard, he had to leave
the platform. The congregation had no idea why the pastor and the
choir all had tears streaming down their faces and convulsed in
laughter. Anyway, they were named Baptist Beans after that."
2-16 oz. cans Bush's Baked Beans
1-32 oz. can Van Kamp's Pork n' Beans
1 lb. Kielbasa
1 lb. ground beef
1 ½ c. Hickory smoked Bar-B-Q sauce
1 Tbsp. Yellow mustard
2/3 c. Brown sugar
¼ c. Molasses
1 Medium onion chopped
Over a medium heat, brown onion in some olive oil, add beef and Kielbasa. Cook until liquids are reabsorbed into the meat.
Drain juice off beans. When meat is done, add all ingredients together and mix well. Bake in a large baking pan, uncovered, at 400º for 1 hour (in a gas oven). In an electric oven, cook at 350º for 1 hour.
Beans will be brown around the sides of the pan.
This can be made up the day before and baked an hour before serving. Serves 16-20
